Context

What would you do when traveling in an autonomous car?

Would you get bored? Would you get tired of staring at screens? How can we get you excited and happy?
In this design strategy project, Ford asked us to develop a concept that leverages wearables technology to provide novel in-car services for their future users. The client intends to include these as additional features to spec-up the car at the time of purchase, to elevate the travel experience. We approached this problem uniquely with the following question- what makes people excited and happy? What values could we learn from the Scandinavian lifestyle concepts ‘Hygge’ and ‘Lagom’? And how can this inspire a strategy concept? When we asked people about their happiest memories with their car, everyone unanimously started describing the nature around them: the trees, the scenery, the waters, and of course, the people with whom they spent that time. Pondering upon this signal, we discovered the connection between happiness and “getting closer to nature” and how cars enable this experience.
